July 26, 2004 NEWS RELEASE

PAN forging ahead with new national advisory board

Kathy McKee, founder and chairman of Protect Arizona Now [PAN], remains cautiously optimistic that its initiative, the Arizona Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, will qualify for the November 2004 ballot. A county-by-county validation of 5% sampling against voter rolls is in progress.

Anticipating that ballot status will be known within 2-3 weeks, McKee has announced the formation of a National Advisory Board chaired by Dr. Virginia Deane Abernethy, professor emeritus at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Abernethy edited the scholarly journal, Population and Environment, for ten years. She is the author of Population Politics, available from Transaction Publications; her 1979 book, Population Pressure and Cultural Adjustment, will be reissued in paperback in early 2005. She is also on the boards of the non-profit membership organizations, Population-Environment Balance and Carrying Capacity Network.

Abernethy comments, "I owe it to my own and others' grandchildren to work to maintain the environmental, cultural, and social integrity of the United States, and to hold the federal government accountable for their constitutionally-mandated duty to protect this nation from invasion. I wholeheartedly support PAN because States should be held responsible for protecting their citizens from the abuses and financial burdens that accompany illegal immigration. When government on all levels shamefully refuse to fulfill their constitutional and moral obligations to protect Americans, citizens have no choice but to take steps to force government to enforce our laws."

Adds McKee, "The citizens of Arizona have proven themselves quite capable of waging this battle for our state within Arizona. However, we did 'sort of' underestimate the huge issue PAN would be nationally, especially now that ours is the only state initiative of its kind in the 2004 election. Dr. Abernethy truly is the grande dame of the anti-illegal immigration movement, and as such, is much more qualified to address national ramifications and political implications of what's going on out here than we are. Actually, I had initially hoped the politicians formerly associated with PAN and national groups such as FAIR could fulfill this role, but after their personal and pecuniary-based agendas became painfully obvious, we had to go back and rethink that strategy – and look at the fantastic opportunity that awaited PAN . . . Dr. Abernethy patriotically and selflessly agreeing to come on board!"
