News Release, July 21, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Kathy McKee July 21, 2004 NEWS RELEASE PETITION TURN-IN TO SECRETARY OF STATE NEW POLL SHOWS SUPPORT - DECREASING OPPOSITION TO PAN INITIATIVE A just-released poll conducted by Dr. Bruce Merrill for KAET-TV/Channel 8 and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University shows that support for the Protect Arizona Now [PAN] citizens initiative has risen to 74% today from 70% in September, 2003, with "undecideds" holding steady at 10%. The question posed was the same as the previous question: In November, an initiative may be on the ballot called Protect Arizona NOW. This initiative would deny state and local social and welfare services to illegal immigrants and require everyone who registers to vote to prove they are U.S. citizens and to provide identification when voting. Will you probably vote for or against this proposition? for: 74% against: 16% don’t know/no opinion: 10% total: 100% PAN founder and Chairman, Kathy McKee, states, "It is wonderful to have our personal experience, which is that the overwhelming majority of Arizonans love our initiative, validated by such a highly respected poll." Continues McKee, "I’ve always believed Arizonans are incredibly frustrated with every level of government for not listening to what we all know is a huge majority of citizens on this issue. PAN has provided a path to success for us to be heard and to do something about our pathetically disconnected, incompetent, if not outright corrupt, government officials who refuse to do their job to enforce our laws . . . which, not coincidentally, may be why Arizona’s governor and entire congressional delegation continue to thumb their noses at their own constituents by steadfastly opposing our initiative. We have neither a republic nor a democracy in America anymore. If we did, everyday citizens like us wouldn’t have to turn their lives upside-down and take the extraordinary actions we’ve had to, just to get our laws enforced. And the sad part of this, amidst the good news about support increasing, is that these government officials continue to show no compunction for ignoring their constituents or failing to do their jobs." It is too soon to know, however, if citizens will have the opportunity to vote on the PAN initiative, the Arizona Taxpayer and Citizens Protection Act, in November because its ballot status has yet to be confirmed by the Secretary of State’s office. If PAN acquires ballot status, it will then be identified as Proposition 200. Concludes McKee, "We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will get ballot status. Arizonans have worked hard for it, and this poll clearly shows deep support." Join Protect Arizona Now today! |
