Open Border Entry For Illegal Immigrants Must Cease Commentary by Donald A. Collins, The Washington Dispatch, May 11, 2004 While the threat of more terrorism in the U.S. stems from the Iraqi invasion, the un-stemmed tide of humanity streaming across our borders, particularly in our Southwest, will no doubt prove to be more of a threat to our security and overall well being than international terrorism... Since 1965 when US policy on immigration was drastically and ironically altered by unwise Federal immigration legislation, allegedly to help our own poor minorities, the net effect has given the allocated benefit money mainly to immigrants and allowed over 40 million mostly Hispanic newcomers, many illegally, many crossing the Mexican border, trashing and victimizing our citizens in their wake. Hispanics now outnumber African Americans in the US. That unfair and unlawful condition will continue as long as our government leaders fail to heed the pleas of a majority of Americans who for years have been on record as wanting fewer immigrants... Our national leaders have ignored this crisis, pretending that the leftist cries of “racism” are correct. They do this despite the rising anger of the vast majority of American citizens who now can plainly see this excess immigrant problem is undermining our own work force, our educational institutions and our cultural integrity just to please the corporate political donors who want slave labor and the self appointed Hispanic lobbies who push for more, more, more. ... [Joe] Guzzardi reports, “Contributing to the Wild-West atmosphere is an increased flow of migrants willing to do anything to elude capture. The Associated Press reported that as of March 31 2004, illegal immigration is up 25% or 535,000 illegal aliens compared with the similar period last year. Kathy McKee, Director of Protect Arizona Now tells me that two different Border Patrol sources say between 8,000-10,000 aliens cross the Tucson Sector every twelve hours. That, calculates McKee, is 20,000 aliens a day—the equivalent of a new Arizona every eleven months.” An Arizona resident offers this typical comment: “Living on the border has put us on high alert 24/7. The refusal of our elected officials to uphold the U.S. Constitution and protect us from invasion has forced many men and women to purchase firearms and learn to use them. When I get dressed in the morning, I put on my holster and .38 S&W to protect my six-year-old daughter and myself...” This should not be America. As we lavishly squander our resources abroad, our government simultaneously fails to help protect our own citizens at home. Over 80% of Americans are mad as hell about this avalanche of illegals. This is not a racial question, it is a matter of equity and enforcing the Rule of Law. While Bush and Arizona’s senators like John McCain still don’t get it, wouldn’t it be ironic if ignoring illegal immigration cost Bush a Second Term? And John McCain his seat? Let’s make it happen. Collins, a free lance writer living in Washington, D.C. frequently writes on matters of public policy. For many years he has served on the board of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). |
