Migrant measure halfway to ballot goal

Organizers of Protect Arizona Now said Wednesday they have collected half the necessary signatures to put the measure on the Nov. 2 ballot.
 
Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, said the group has more than 60,000 signatures. He said a recent infusion of money to the campaign and the work of 2,000 volunteers should be enough to gather the rest. They need 122,600 by July 1.
 
The measure seeks to deny publicly funded services to undocumented migrants.
 
"People are anxious to sign," Pearce said. "I've gone door to door, and nobody has turned me down in signing the petition."
 
Alfredo Gutierrez of the Statue of Liberty Coalition, formed to defeat the measure, isn't surprised.
 
"We always assumed these folks would succeed in collecting the signatures," Gutierrez said. "The great debate will begin July 1."...
