Why Won’t Our Federal Government Enforce Our Immigration Laws? Commentary by Donald A. Collins, The Washington Dispatch, May 3, 2004 It would have all been so simple if our Federal government had done its job, even after the passage of the 1965 legislation which was designed to help our inner city minorities, but mainly benefited immigrants. But, no, the usual forces of indecision–our national representatives, our “supposed to care for us” politicians--were melded with the ethnic lobbies and the cheap labor crowd so that since then over 40 million new comers have arrived, impacting America in ways most people, even most of the more recent arrived migrants, see as untenable and unhealthy. It is not the wave of new ethnicity, which are predominantly people of Hispanic origin, that is cause for concern, but rather the simple overload which such a wave of largely uneducated, unskilled and culturally untutored persons brings to a system which increasingly needs more educated workers... Unlike earlier migrations, people from Europe coming for a new life, border crossers from Mexico now are here for hire, but not often for citizenship commitment. And they demand services to which only citizens should get: ID cards, Drivers licenses, tuition to our elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities, which they often get, taking away such places from our own citizens... Now a broad number of American jobs are being “outsourced” to cheap foreign labor sites in China and India, while the flow of migrants, legal and illegal, arrive at 1.5 million per year, with millions more new immigrants being proposed by an amnesty plan just announced by the Bush administration. The Bush plan if enacted will insure a US population of 1 billion in 50 years. As if our present population of 300 million weren’t enough. Citizen anger is deeply rising from many places... One hot spot is Arizona, where illegal aliens stream into the US making dangerous trespasses and putting US residents and their property at that border in harms way. A new group, Protect Arizona Now (PAN) has pushed a ballot proposition which requires prospective voters and those seeking state government services to prove they are U.S. citizens. Federal mandates related to undocumented aliens [illegal aliens] -- such as those in the areas of health care and education -- are not subject to PAN. The referendum also wants to require state agencies to report illegal aliens to the federal government... Those efforts got a boost recently with a $100,000 contribution from the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The Washington D.C.-based group favors tougher immigration and border controls and its arms gave two $50,000 contributions to PAN... PAN supporters point out “it’s amazing that our government can track a cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington. Also they track her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 10 to 20 million illegal aliens wandering around in our country.” They suggest a solution: “Give every illegal alien a cow”. ... Why won’t our Federal Government enforce our immigration laws? The answer so far has been clear. Because enough enlightened voters haven’t taken the pelts of those deaf representatives who persist in ignoring their duty to act under our time honored core principle, the Rule of Law. Collins, a free lance writer in DC, often writes on policy issues. |
