Initiative backers to hire workers

With two months left before the July 1 deadline, a national group is shelling out $100,000 to pay workers to collect signatures to put the Protect Arizona Now proposition on the November ballot.
 
Backers said they have raised $26,600 in Arizona and that the donation by the Federation for American Immigration Reform will significantly improve their chances of collecting the necessary 122,600 valid signatures. The initiative seeks to deny undocumented migrants [illegal aliens] publicly funded social services.
 
...Alfredo Gutierrez of the Statue of Liberty Coalition, formed to defeat the measure in Arizona [said:]
 
"They will have a lot of extra money to spend here," said Gutierrez, noting that his group has raised about $50,000 of the estimated $2 million necessary to wage a successful campaign against Protect Arizona Now.
